Abstract

Telka pear (Pyrus cordata syn. P. boissieriana Buhse) is a valuable wild pear species native to Iran, with its main center of distribution and diversity in Mazandaran Province. It has long been used as rootstock for the propagation of local pear cultivars. This study aimed to evaluate the morphological and pomological diversity of wild Telka pear genotypes in the Savadkuh region of Mazandaran Province, Iran, in 2024. For this purpose, 20 wild pear genotypes were collected, and fruit weight, fruit length and diameter, leaf length and width, petiole length, leaf area, and chlorophyll index (SPAD) were measured. The results revealed that fruit weight showed the highest variability, whereas the showed the lowest. Overall, the findings of this study demonstrated the presence of valuable morphological diversity among wild P. cordata genotypes. This germplasm represents valuable resources for pear breeding programs, the conservation and management of genetic resources, and the preservation of biodiversity.
