To characterize leaf (Lr), stem (Sr) and stripe (Yr) rust resistance genes in 124 Iranian wheat genotypes, presence/ absence of 18 rust resistance genes were investigated using molecular markers. The Iranian wheat genotypes were characterized for the seedling resistance genes Lr29, Lr28, Lr25, and Sr26, the linkage groups Lr19/Sr25, Lr35/Sr39, Lr24/Sr24, Lr20/Sr15, Sr31/Lr26/Yr9, Lr37/Sr38/Yr17 and the widely used gene combination of Lr34/Yr18. The results showed that the seedling resistance genes Lr25, Lr28, Lr29, Sr26 and the gene combinations of Lr20/Sr15 and Lr35/Sr39 were not present in any of the studied genotypes and Lr24/Sr24 was found only in line M-87-18. The most frequent detected genes were Lr26/Sr31/Yr9 and Lr34/Yr18 in 40 and 39 genotypes, respectively. In 15 genotypes including commercial cultivars Tajan, Atrak, Dez, Star, Rasoul and MV-17 presence of Lr26/Sr31/Yr9 and Lr34/Yr18 combinations was confirmed. Lr37/Sr38/Yr17 was found in seven genotypes. Lines WS-86-13, N-86-6 and N-87-6 carried combination of Lr37/Sr38/Yr17 with Lr26/Sr31/Yr9 and combination of Lr37/Sr38/Yr17 with Lr34/Yr18 was detected in S-87-20. Using the tightly linked maker csLV34b, the presence of Lr34/Yr18 could not be confirmed in any of tested durum genotypes.
